H: Hershey

H is for my dog Hershey whom my mother put down March 19, 2015.  She was 14 (born Nov 2000) and the younger sister of C: Cisco.

She was very different than her brother, not he brightest bulb, always wanting to please us, usually wanting attention – nudging our hands and whining/whimpering/barking when we stopped.  No matter how much we brought her around other dogs she was always terrified of them, with her family being exceptions.  Her parents lived next door for years and of course was raised with her brother.

The last few years of her life she was becoming riddled with tumors, her mind clearly slipping away, usually wanting to be alone, began barking at nothing, and didn’t are for her brother.  She still wasn’t ready to go, but my mom disagreed.  The last several hours of her life were spent with me, Cisco, and the outdoors.  Here are a few pictures of her last day.

Have you ever had a pet you had to put down?

We had to put down our 15 year old Yorkie Beau. He was a great friend and family member. But he had so many things wrong that it was the right thing to do.

growing up, I lived out in the country. (cows were my neighbours.) so we couldn’t always make a trip into town to bring a pet to a vet; and even more often than not, we couldn’t afford it. so we had to learn ways to do it ourselves. it was very heart-breaking. but I think it’s desensitized me to death, now. (possibly a little too much, honestly.)
